Bridesmaids Dresses-Shopping for fabrics

Hey brides and bridesmaids to be,
Deciding on the appropriate fabrics for bridesmaid dresses can be daunting, as the fabric of choice may not flatter the figure of every bridesmaid in your bridal party.

The fabric for bridesmaid dresses typically depend on the time of the year and most importantly, the SHAPE of your bridesmaids. It is important to note that while the descriptions below give a general idea of each fabric, the characteristic can vary greatly based on the quality of each fabric. Thus, it s important the bride feels each fabric before purchasing. Common fabrics used for bridesmaid dresses include but not limited to the following:

CHIFFON:
Not to be confused with Georgette, chiffon is lightweight and flowing, does not cling to the body and drapes beautifully. Chiffon is ideal for out door weddings, summer weddings as it helps with keeping the body cool. Furthermore, chiffon is flattering on most body type as it is a forgiving fabric unlike satin and taffeta.

This is similar to chiffon in feel and drapes. However, it is less sheer and slightly heavier than chiffon. Best to use during warm climates, out door weddings and equally flattering on most body type.

SATIN (Bridal Satin, Duchess Satin) :
Satin is a comfortable fabric and stands out well in pictures. Satin drapes well with the body, thus a great fabric for body fitting styles. Satin dresses flatter the hour glass and pear shape. Duchess satin is similar to satin, but less shiny and more structured. This enables it to be used in a variety of styles.

CHARMEUSE:
Charmeuse is quite similar to satin, but it is lighter and softer and best combined with chiffon. It should be avoided during warm-hot climates as it shows sweat marks, spills easily.

JERSEY:
Stretchy fabric with a lot of bounce. Lightweight jersey drapes beautifully and best for the hourglass figure and pear shape as it is not a forgiving fabric.

LACE:
Chantilly or Cord, French or Irish, long sleeve or short, nothing, absolutely nothing is lovelier than a lace bridesmaid dress. Lace does not ravel, it is forgiving, thus can be worn by all body types. Lace pairs beautifully with all fabrics, thus the GO TO CHOICE for a lot of bridesmaids.

  1. Hey, it is extremely nice post. It is quite hard to decide on dress fabric whenever you think of bridesmaid dress. For me chiffon is perfect for all seasons. My cousin had summer wedding at beachside NYC wedding venues and I felt truly comfortable in my chiffon dress on that hot day.
